The Mountain
Montserrat is an enormous rock that is over 4,000 feet high and visible for miles. Its strange shapes and rounded peaks stretch up towards the sky. There are paths, steps, caves, chapels and hermitages scattered around the mountain range and it boasts an extraordinary scenery and spectacular views. It is no surprise that the mountain is also a natural park.
The Monastery and the Black Virgin
The 1,000-year old Benedictine Monastery is half way up the mountain and sheltered by its peaks.
There is a basilica with the chapel of the Virgin de Montserrat, known as “La Moreneta”, patron saint of Catalonia.
The community of monks also runs a boy's school dedicated to the study of music.
Sanctuary of Montserrat
The sanctuary surrounds the monastery and there are many things to see and do:
It is one of the best spots to take photos, with spectacular views of the mountains.
There are market stalls selling local products including honey and mató (fresh cheese).
Museum of Montserrat with a large collection of paintings by Dalí, Picasso, El Greco, as well as treasures from Ancient Egypt.
Restaurants and souvenir shops.
